FANUC SR-3iA/U Brings SCARA Motion to a Ceiling-Mount Layout
FANUC expanded its SCARA range with the SR-3iA/U, a ceiling-mount model designed around a full 360-degree work envelope. The layout moves the robot structure above the work area, opening space beneath it for fixtures, conveyors and operator access.
What changes when the robot is overhead
A ceiling-mounted SCARA can serve stations around its base without occupying the center of the cell. That makes the architecture attractive for compact electronics assembly, medical-device handling, packaging and high-speed pick-and-place work.
The overhead position also changes engineering details. The support frame must handle static and dynamic loads without unwanted deflection. Utilities need controlled routing, and maintenance access must be designed rather than improvised with a ladder after installation.
A 360-degree envelope still needs zone planning
The circular work area can reduce transfer distances, but it may bring more equipment into the robot's reachable space. Model tooling, feeders, cameras, guarding and service positions. Define safe access and recovery for every station.
For conveyor tracking or vision-guided picking, preserve calibration between the camera, conveyor and robot frame. FANUC's Automate material also describes an SR-9iA/R using iRVision 3DV for circular conveyor tracking, showing how SCARA cells are increasingly tied to perception and synchronized motion.
Maintenance implications
Plan access to motors, cables, lubrication points and connectors without requiring unsafe body position. Inspect the overhead frame, fasteners and cable supports under the engineered schedule. Store mastering or calibration data, controller backup, tool dimensions, payload and vision settings together.
A replacement arm or controller must be checked against the exact model and software options. SCARA naming similarities do not guarantee identical mounting, reach, controller or cable requirements.
Vibocnc view
The SR-3iA/U is a layout tool as much as a robot model. Its main benefit appears when cell designers use the overhead architecture to simplify material flow while preserving maintainability.
